At last we are going to Socotra , thought I would never get there. Having lived in Yemen for 3 years in the 1970s it was not possible to get to Socotra as the Island belonged to South Yemen which was under communist control, this was a source of great disapointment for me as it was well known as a place where some fantastic plants were growing. Anyway after much negotiating with travel company we got a package tour organised and we eventually were on our way.
I was going with Leo vanderHoeven and Wiebe Bosma but at the last minute a friend of mine who had no interest in succulent plants decided that he would like to join us, so the four of us set of and eventually arrive in Sanaa the capital of Yemen. It was 32 years since I had been in Sanaa and was surprised to see that actually not much had changed. We were met by our driver/guide and were taken to our first hotel.
