Early May Happenings
It is now early May and just having had a quick look around the greenhouse I thought I would share a few pictures with you. There is a lot happening right now so look out for further posts in near future.
Anyway what caught my eye was a nice flower spike on Aloe squarrosa from Socotra, this is a fairly uncommon plant in cultivation. I have often seen plants labelled as Aloe squarrosa in various shows and other people’s collections but invariably it was not the right plant. We found this plant while we were in Socotra. It was growing at quite a high altitude. It is a very strikingly marked aloe and quite beautiful.
Also what really stuck out was the flowers on the Euthorbia millotii . This plant is growing in a bed and is beginning to sprawl around quite nicely. At this time of the year the pink hanging flowers are quite noticeable, with the leaves just emerging from the stems.
Another Euphorbia that is quite striking at this time of the year is Euphorbia vigueri. These are tall columnar plants and you always find this sort of ring of fairly tight cylindrical flowers at the top of the stems in a cluster. And last but not least is the hypanthodium of Dorstenia gigas. I have quite a few clusters of flowers on my plant this year. It doesn’t always happen but it seems that this year the plant has decided to chuck out some flowers.
So just a quick one at this moment in time but I hope you enjoy looking at the pictures. More to follow.
